Love Handles to Treat Disease

Some of us have a little extra padding on the backside.  While this might not sit well with us when we look in the mirror, that cellulite is now the bearer of good news.

Researchers in California found that fat cells removed through liposuction can actually be turned into embryonic-like stem cells.  These cells, called iPS cells, have all the properties of embryonic stem cells but don’t require the destruction of human life.

We’ve known for some time that we can get ethically sound embryo-like, iPS cells without destroying embryos (but that’s another discussion altogether).  This latest research provides yet another – and perhaps even better – source for these cells.

This might make liposuction a surgery we can all get behind.
